AMD Radeon RX 580
The RX 580 is a mid-range graphics card that was released by AMD on 18th January 2017. It is based on the GCN 4 architecture and manufactured in the 14 nm process. The GPU is a slight upgrade to the previous generation RX 480.
The card features 2304 shader processing units, 144 texture-mapping units and 32 ROPs. The core runs at a base clock of 1257 MHz with a boost of up to 1340 MHz. The GPU has a maximum memory amount of 8 GB GDDR5 using the 256-bit memory bus width.
The memory speed is 8000 MHz and the GPU has a total bandwidth of 256 GB/s. The card has 1x HDMI, 3x DisplayPort video connectors and supports DirectX 12 and OpenGL 4.6 APIs. Its power consumption is rated at 185 Watt.
Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080
The GTX 1080 is a high-end graphics card that was released by Nvidia on 27th may 2016. It is the second fastest Pascal GPU. It is based on the GP104 chip using Pascal architecture and manufactured in the 16 nm FinFET process at TSMC.
Its performance is up to 65% higher than that of the previous generation GTX 980 and 30% faster than the GTX 980 Ti.
The GPU features 2560 shader-processing units. The GPU runs at a base clock speed of 1607 MHz and 1733 MHz when boosted. It features a maximum 8 GB GDDR5X memory connected using the 256-bit interface at 10,000 MHz clock speed, the resulting bandwidth is 320 GB/s.
The GPU has 1x DVI, 1 x HDMI and 3x DisplayPort video connectors. The GTX 1080 supports DirectX 12 (12_1) and OpenGL 4.5 APIs. It is rated at 180 TDP.
According to our AMD Radeon RX 580 vs GTX 1080 benchmark results, the 1080 is much more powerful than the 580. In non-gaming performance, the 1080 provides 39% better texture detail than the 580 in the Parallax benchmark with 391 fps against 281 fps.
In the MRender benchmark, the 1080 provided 60% faster multi rendering than the 580 with 232 fps against 145 fps. It also had 86% faster NBody calculation than the RX 580.
The GTX 1080 out performed the midrange 580 in all gaming benchmarks. In Apex Legends, at max settings, 1080p, it averaged at 117 fps while the 580 averaged at 80 fps. The game CS GO, the 1080 averaged at 206 fps while the 580 provided 151 fps.
In Fortnite, the 1080 provided 133 fps while the RX averaged at 91 fps. The GTX 1080 topped the 580 in all the other titles including Overwatch, GTA V and PUBG.
The GTX 1080 provides higher gaming performance than the RX 580. However, the RX 580 is a newer product and is more likely to have better long-term support, but for performance, the GTX 1080 is the card to go with.
