The GeForce GTX is an entry-level GTX 10’ series gaming card. It was released in October 2016 to compete with AMD’s lower and mid-range GPUs. It uses the GP107 chip made using the 14 nm process at Samsung.
The GP107-400 chip used for the GTX 1050 has five activated Streaming Multiprocessors which translates into 640 shaders, 40 texture mapping units and 32 render output processors.
The GTU has a maximum of 2 GB GDDR5 frame buffer connected via a 128-bit bus interface. The memory speed is clocked at 7008 MHz, which brings the total bandwidth to 112 GB/s. The GTX 1050 supports 1 DVI, 1 HDMI and 1 DisplayPort video connectors. And just like the GTX 1080, it supports the OpenGL 4.5 and DirectX 12_1 APIs.

The GTX 1080 is a high-end Pascal based graphics card. It was released by Nvidia in May 2016 about 5 months before the lower end 1050. The card is manufactured in 16 nm FinFET process at TSMC using the GP104 chip.
The performance of the GPU is about 65% higher than the GTX 980 it replaces and 30% more than the Maxwell Titan X and GTX 980 Ti. This means that the 1080 is in the absolute high-end section and can run most titles at decent fps in 4K.
The GTX 1080 chip has 20 streaming multiprocessors activated, this offers 2560 shaders, 160 texture mapping units and 64 render output processing units. The GPU is clocked at 1607 MHz with the boost clock going up to 1733 MHz.
The GTX 1080 offers a maximum of 8 GB GDDR5 RAM connected through a 256-bit bus interface. Furthermore, the memory runs at 10 GB/s and the total bandwidth adds up to 320 GB/s. The GPU supports DirectX 12_1 feature and OpenGL 4.5.
The GTX 1050 vs 1080 benchmarks show that the GTX 1080 is up to 130% faster than the GTX 1050. Furthermore, in the gaming tests by the UserBenchmark, the 1080 provides up to 124% more fps than the 1050.
With the game GTA V, at 1080p resolution and max settings, the GTX 1080 averages at 94 fps against 38 fps by the 1050. Moreover, in Battlefield 1, the high end 1080 averages at 111 fps vs 43 fps by the 1050 and 94 fps in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt against 37 fps averaged by the GTX 1050.
The performance difference between the GTX 1080 and the GTX 1050 is huge. However, so is the price difference. The GTX 1050 is intended for entry-level gamers while the 1080 is for enthusiasts.
