Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 vs AMD RX 570 Comparison Review

In this GTX 1060 vs RX 570 article, we revisit the mid-range GPU battle between AMD and Nvidia. The mid-range and 1080p resolution is the gaming sweet spot between value and performance so it is with a good reason that most gaming happens in this area.

The AMD RX 570 is a strong graphics card aimed for 1080p gaming. The 1060 is also aimed for 1080p but can also perform smoothly in the 1440p area. Currently, the GTX 1060 is the most popular graphics card in the market according to statistics provided by Steam. So how do the two compare?

Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060

The GTX 1060 is a mid-range graphics card that was released by Nvidia on July 7th, 2016, just a few months after AMD released the RX 480. This was to control its market share which would have otherwise gone to AMD.

The GPU is based on the smaller GP106 chip, the GTX 1070 and 1080 are based on the 36% larger GP104 chip. Although the chip is smaller, it supports all Pascal architecture features, including Simultaneous Multi Projection.

Whereas the larger GP104 chip used in the top tier GPUs has as many as 20 Streaming Multiprocessors, the GTX 1060 has only been fitted with half the amount. This means the 1060 only has 1280 shader units and 80 texture mapping units.

The GPU runs at 1506 MHz base frequency and 1708 MHz boost clock. It uses a maximum of 6 GB GDDR5 RAM clocked at 8000 MHz. the total bandwidth is 192.2 GB/s.

In this GTX 1060 vs RX 570 article, we will use the GTX 1060 3GB variant as it better compares to the 570 than the 6GB version. The 6GB variant compares with RX 580.

AMD Radeon RX 570

The AMD RX 570 is a gaming performance card released by AMD in April 2016. Initially, it was aimed to compete with the GTX 1050 Ti. The GPU is based on the Polaris 20 GPU and is manufactured in the 14 nm process technology. The RX 570 replaces the older RX 470 and it runs at a slightly faster clock speed than its predecessor.

The RX 570 comes with 2048 shader units, 32 ROPs and 128 TMUs. It is clocked at a base frequency of 1168 MHz and its boost clock can hit up to 1244 MHz. the GPU comes with a 4GB GDDR5 memory buffer through a 256-bit memory interface. The memory is clocked at 7000 MHz bringing the total bandwidth to 224 GB/s.

Benchmark performance

In the gaming benchmarks carried out by UserBenchmark, the 3 GB GTX 1060 provides 151 fps in CS GO at 1080p and max settings, the RX 570 provides 121 fps. Used in PUBG, the GTX 1060 averages at 65 fps compared to 62 fps by the 570. In GTA V, the 1060 leads with 60 fps against 46 fps. The RX 570 averages at 123 fps in DOTA 2 against the GTX 1060’s 117 fps.

Overall, the gaming performance capabilities of the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060-3GB version are marginally better than the AMD Radeon RX 570 4GB GPU. The difference between them is not enough to warrant an upgrade. Hope our GTX 1060 vs RX 570 comparison was helpful. In case of any question, ask us in the comment section below and we will answer.
