Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060
The GTX 1060 is the third Nvidia card to feature the 16 nm Pascal architecture. It was released on 19th July 2016 as a desktop mid-range GPU. It is built on the GP106 chip in the 16 nanometre FinFET process at TSMC.
The card features 1280 shaders and runs at a base frequency of 1506 MHz and 1708 MHz boost. It exists in two variants, the 6GB version and the 3GB version which has 128 fewer shader units. The maximum memory amount is 6 GB GDDR5 which is connected using a 192-bit bus.
The memory speed is 8000 MHz and the GPU has a total bandwidth of 192 GB/s. The card features VR Ready, G-SYNC and Multi-Monitor technologies and supports DirectX 12_1 and OpenGL 4.5 APIs. The recommended system power unit for this card is 400 watts.
AMD Radeon RX 480
The RX 480 is an upper mid-range graphics card that was released by AMD in June 2016. It is built using the AMD Polaris GCN 4.0 architecture and built on the Ellesmere chip using 14 nm FinFET manufacturing process.
The GPU features 2304 shaders, almost twice that of the GTX 1060. It operates at a frequency of 1120 MHz base and 1266 MHz boost. It exists in two variants based on the memory installed with the maximum being 8 GB GDDR5 and the other version having 4 GB. The memory speed is 8000 MHz using a 265-bit bus width; the resulting memory is therefore 224 GB/s.
The card is rated at 150 watts TDP. It supports DirectX 12 and OpenGL 4.5 APIs.
In the GTX 1060 vs RX 480 benchmark results, you will find that the performance difference between the two cards is marginal. In the non-gaming benchmarks by the UserBenchmark, the GTX 1060 performed slightly better than the RX 480. The 1060 had slightly faster multi-rendering in the MRender Benchmark with 164 fps against 147 fps.
It also had 7% faster NBody calculation in the Gravity benchmark with 227 fps against 213 fps. The RX 480, on the other hand, had 27% better texture detail than the 1060 in the Parallax benchmark.
In the gaming benchmarks, the RX 480 averaged at 75 fps in Battlefield 1, max settings at 1080p, while the 1060 provided 70 fps. However, the 1060 had better fps in all the other titles tested. In Overwatch, the GTX 1060 averaged at 101 fps against 95 fps by the 480. It provided 68 fps in PUBG against 59 fps and 101 fps in Fortnite against the 480’s 88 fps.
The GTX 1060 slightly outperforms the RX 480 in all the benchmarks. The RX 480 is more future proof although it is a month older than the 1060 because of its 8 GB RAM, driver updates and significant performance improvements in DirectX 12 gaming.
