In this GTX 1070 vs RTX 2080 comparison review, we will compare the older 1070 from Nvidia GTX series to the newer 2080 from the RTX series.
Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 is a high-end graphic card from the GTX series of Nvidia. It was released in the 2nd quarter of 2016. The GPU is the second card that has the 16nm Pascal based cards. It was a shrink from 25nm to 16nm that resulted into a more energy efficient card.
While the Nvidia RTX 2080 is another high-end graphics card from the RTX series of Nvidia. It was released in the 3rd quarter of 2018. The GPU was based on the new Turing architecture which boasts a ne AI and tracing technology that can result into a better performance. But currently there is no game which can take advantage of this new tech.
GTX 1070 was codenamed P104-200-A1 while the GTX 1660 Ti was codenamed GT104. The GTX 1070 have 1506 MHz core speed that can be boosted to 1683 MHz. While the RTX 2080, have a core speed of 1515 MHz and can be boosted up to 1800 MHz, the RTX 2080 is the clear-cut winner on this category. Overclock potential for 1070 is good while for the 2080 it is fair.
Both GPUs have 8gb of memory, memory speed for 1070 is 2002 MHz greater than the 1750 MHz of the 2080. Both have also 256-bit of memory bus, the 1070 has the older GDDR5 memory type while the 2080 has the newer GDDR6 memory type.
Memory bandwidth of the 1070 is lower than that of the 2080. It has only 256.3GB/sec while the 2080 has 448GB/sec.
Shader Processing Units for the 1070 is lower compared to the 2080, it has only 1920 compared to the 2944 of the 2080. Texture mapping units of the 1070 is only 120, short compared to the 184 of the 2080.
Another category the texture rate, the 1070 has also fell short compared to the 2080, 180.7 GTexel/s for GTX 1070 to the 278.8 GTexel/s of the RTX 2080. 1070 has low pixel rate too, only 96.4 GPixel/s to the 97 GPixel/s of the 2080.
Power Consumption and System Suggestions
Let go to the power consumption on this GTX 1070 vs RTX 2080 comparison review. GTX 1070 has a rated board TDP of 150W while the RTX 2080 has a rated TDP of 215. Both needed at least a 500W PSU with one available 8-pin connector for power.
GTX 1070 is best suited for resolutions up to 2560×1600 and the RTX 2080 is best suited for resolutions up to 3840×2160. We recommend a High-End Processor and 16GB of RAM for Optimal Performance for both GPUs.
In terms of game performance, the GTX 1070 is a high-performance GPU. It is capable of gaming at 1080p across all modern AAA games. And at high graphics setting and delivers a smooth game.
While the RTX 2080 is a graphics card suitable for 4K gaming and it is also high-performance GPU capable of handling most of the modern games.
WE tested these two for Game FPS using 10 games. We tested it on CSGO, Fortnite, PUBG, GTA V, Overwatch, League of Legends, Battlefield 1, The Witcher 3, World of Warcraft and Minecraft. It is clearly eminent that the GTX 1070 has lower game FPS compared to the RTX 2080 in all the ten games.
According to UserBenchmark in terms of speed rank the 1070 ranks 27th only. While the 2080, ranks 10th among graphic cards.
For me it is obvious that the RTX 2080 is the clear winner on this comparison. It performed well and has the greater game FPS on the games we tested. It is the newer and has the updated memory among the two.
That concludes my GTX 1070 vs RTX 2080 comparison review. Hope you learned a lot, see you on the next one!
