In this GTX 1080 vs RTX 2060 we will compare and differentiate these two great graphic cards from Nvidia, we will do a thorough look on how these cards perform on each category we have.
The Nvidia Geforce GTX 1080 is a flagship graphics card when it was released on the 2nd quarter of 2016. It has the 16 nm chip based on the Pascal architecture a significant shrink from 28 nm.
While the Nividia GeForce RTX 1060 is a latest graphic card it was released on the 1st quarter of 2019. It is the latest addition to the RTX series. It tis based on the Turing architecture.
The GPU on the GTX 1080 is codenamed P104-400-A1 which belongs to the first-generation Pascal GPU. While the RTX 2060 is codenamed GT104 and belongs to the first-generation Turing GPU.
Core speed on a GTX 1080 is greater than the RTX 2060, 1080 registers at 1607 MHz while the 2060 at 1515 MHz. Although when boosted the GTX 1080 is registers at a lower 1733 MHz, while the RTX is great at 1800 MHz. Driver support for GTX 1080 is not great compared to the RTX 2060 great driver support.
In terms of Shader Processing Units, the GTX 1080 is not so good compared to 2060, it only registered 2560 compared to the 2944 of the latter. Both have great actual shader performance at 100%.
Texture Mapping Units on 1080 was again surpassed by the 2060, it only registered 160 to the 184 of the 2060. On the Texture Rate the again the 1080 was behind the 2060 although the GTX 1080 has a great Pixel Rate compared to RTX 2060. Both registered the same Render Output Units at 64.
The 1080 has a slower memory speed compared to the 2060, it has only 1251 MHz. Memory type on the 1080 is the older GDDR5X while the 2060 has the new GDDR6.
Memory bandwidth on a 1080 is slower compared to the 2060, it has only 320.3GB/sec compared to the 448GB/sec on the 2060. Both has the same memory bus at 256-bit.
Let us proceed on this GTX 1080 vs RTX 2060 comparison review. In terms of power consumption, the GTX 1080 consumes less power at only 180 watts. While, the RTX 2060 consumes 215 watts. The 1080 requires a lower PSU of at least 500W while the 2060 requires at least 615W of PSU. Both requires an available 8-pin connector as power connection.
Benchmarks indicate that 1080 is 25% faster that the 980ti at 4k. It can easily topped Dual Radeon R9. At default setting of 1920×1080, the GTX 1080 has a performance boost of 20-30 percent over GTX 980 Ti. This GPU was the fastest single Graphics Card when it went out in 2016.
While the RTX 2060’s performance is much better than the 1080 mainly it is a newer GPU and has the necessary upgrade. 2060 per benchmark is powerful than the 1080 Ti, the upgrade of 1080. It is suitable for 4k gaming because it handles graphics smoothly at high settings.
Recommended processor for system builds for the GTX 1080 is at least Intel Core i7-6700K 4-Core 4.0GHz with 16gb of RAM. It is highly advised that maximum gaming resolution is 2560×1600. This is a bit lower compared to the maximum recommended gaming resolution 2060 can support at 3840×2160.
The RTX 2060 recommended processor is at least Intel Core i7-8700K 6-Core 3.7GHz with also 16gb of RAM.
Honestly, I go for RTX 2060 it is newer and can easily outperform the GTX 1080 in any benchmark. It has also better driver support.
According to our test RTX 2060 is better in performing 4k games and it is smoother in games like CSG0, Battlefield 1 and DOTA 2, compared to GTX 1080.
That is it for our GTX 1080 vs RTX 2060 comparison review. Hope you we help you in getting your next graphics card. See you on the next one!
