In this RX 580 vs 980 Ti post article we will compare the good and bad of these two graphics cards from AMD and Nvidia and see how they perform.

The AMD Radeon RX 580 is a flagship GPU when it was released on April 2017. This card belongs to the AMD Radeon RX 500 series, it has two variant a 4gb and an 8gb. It is one of the two powerful cards from this series. This card offers more VRAM for good gaming performance.

The Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 Ti is an enthusiast board.  It was released on the June 2015 and was based on the second revision of the Maxwell architecture. This was released on June 2015. This card shares the same board with the Titan-x but with restrictions like reducing the CUDA cores.

The RX 580 is codenamed Polaris 20 XTX while the 980 Ti was codenamed GM200-310-A1. In this review we had the RX 580 4gb variant while the GTX 980 Ti has 6gb of memory. Memory speed for the 580 is at 1750 MHz lower than the 980 Ti which is at 1753 MHz.

Memory bus on the 580 is lower at 256bit while on the 980 Ti it has 384bit. Both have the same memory type, GDDR5. Memory bandwidth for the 580 is at 224GB/sec lower compared to the 980 Ti which registers at 336.6GB/sec.

Shader Processing Units for the RX 580 is at 2304 lower than that of the 980 Ti which comes at 2816. Texture mapping units also comes only at 144 low also compared to the 176 of the 980 Ti.

On the texture rate the 580 has edged the 980 Ti. It comes at 181 GTexel/s while the 980 Ti has 176 GTexel/s. While on render output units and pixel rate for the 580 is lower at 32 and 40.2 GPixel/s respectively. The 980 Ti on the other hand has 96 and 96 GPixel/s for render output and pixel rate.

Power Requirements and System Suggestions

Let proceed to the next category on this RX 580 vs 980 Ti comparison review. The RX 580 comes with a power TDP requirement of 150W and requires at least 500W PSU with one 8-pin connector. While the GTX 980 Ti has a rated TDP of 250W. It requires at least a 600 PSU with one available 6-pin and 8-pin connectors.

RX 580 is suited for resolution of up to 2560×1440 and requires a high-end processor and at least 8gb of RAM. While the GTX 980 Ti is best suited for resolution up to 2560×1600 and it is recommended a very strong processor and at least 16gb of RAM for Optimal Performance.

RX 580 performance benchmarks show that it is like GTX 1060 in terms of game performance. It is 8 percent faster than the RX 480 the one it replaced. It is also better than RX 570 by up to 15%.

The GTX 980 Ti on the other hand is slightly above AMD R9 295X2 and overall it is a great graphics card.

We tested these two cards on 12 games namely: CSGO, Fortnite, PUBG, GTA V, LOL, Overwatch, Battlefield 1, The Witcher 3, DOTA 2, WOW, World of Tanks and Minecraft. It showed in our test that the RX 590 was edged by the GTX 980 Ti n all these games with great game FPS.

The winner for this versus is very clear, the GTX 980 Ti has edged the RX 580 on all games in terms of game FPS. I personally like the GTX 980 Ti because it can perform well on almost all modern AAA games.
