RX 580 vs GTX 970 Comparison Review

In this RX 580 vs GTX 970 comparison review, we will take in depth look of the good and bad of these two graphic cards from AMD and Nvidia.

AMD Radeon RX 580 is a flagship GPU by AMD. It is based on the second-generation Polaris architecture. This GPU is a refresh of the RX 480, modifications to the architecture yielded an increase in clock speed around 5-10 percent. And the changes also made the GPUs performance per wattage. There is a 4gb and 8gb variant of this GPU. It was released in the April 2017.

While the Nvidia GeForce GTX 970 is a value for money GPU. It is a game changer in terms of performance per watt. It is based on the groundbreaking Maxwell architecture a big leap from its predecessor the Kepler. This graphics card comes in 4gb variant. The graphic card was released on Sep 2014.

The RX 580 is codenamed Polaris 20 XTX while the GTX 970 is GM204-200-A1. The AMD RX 580 has a core speed of 1257 MHz and a boosted clock speed of 1340 MHz a bit greater than the GTX 970. It only registers at 1050 MZ and has a clock boost of 1178 MHz.

We have compared the RTX 580 4gb variant to the GTX 970 same size variant. Memory speed on the 580 is lower compared to the 970 which registers at 1753 MHz, not that much though.

For the memory bus they have the same 256-bit and also for the memory type, both have GGDR5 type. Memory bandwidth is the same also at 224.4GB/sec.

In terms of shader processing units, the 580 has greater number at 2304 compared to the 1664 only of the 970. Texture mapping units for the RX 580 is greater also compared to the GTX 970 at 144 and 104 respectively.

Texture rate of the 580 is greater compared to 970, it registers at 181 GTexel/s compared to the 109.2 GTexel/s of the 970. But the pixel rate though for the 580 is lower compared to the 970. It has only 40.2 GPixel/s while the 970 has 40.2 GPixel/s.

Power Requirements

Let us proceed to the power requirements of these two GPUs on this RX 580 vs GTX 970 comparison review. Max power for the 580 is 150 Watts a bit higher compared to the 145 Watts of the 970. Both needs at least 500 power supply units with two available 6-pin connectors.

The Radeon RX 580 4gb is best suited for resolution of up to 2560×1440. It is recommended to use high-end processor, Ryzen R5 at least and an 8gb of RAM for optimal gaming resolution.

While the GTX 970 is best suited for resolution of up tp 2560×1440. It is recommended to use a very strong processor and at least 8gb of RAM for optimal performance.

Benchmarks indicate that the 580 4gb has the same gaming performance of that of the GTX 1060. It is 8% faster than its predecessor the RX 480. The 580 is 8-15% better at 1440p frame rates compared to the RX 570.

While the 970 on gaming benchmarks proved that at 4K is 25% faster compare to its predecessor. It even beats the GTX780 at about 10%.

We tested these two graphic cards to see how it perform on the games CSGO, Fortnite, PUBG, GTA V, League of Legends, Overwatch, Battlefield 1, DOTA 2, World of Warcraft, World of Tanks and Minecraft.

According to the test, the Radeon RX 580 have great game FPS compared to the 970 in CSGO, PUBG, Grand Theft Auto V, Battlefield 1, The Witcher and the World of Warcraft.

While the GTX 970 have great game, FPS compared to the 580 on only two games, the CSGO and Minecraft.

In the Userbenchmark speed rank of graphics cards RX 580 at 47th while for the GTX 970 is at 55th.

Here’s the highest rated GTX 970 graphic cards

Based on the game FPS I choose the RTX 580 over the GTX 970. First it is the newer card of the two and basing on the test, the 580 crushed the 970 on the game FPS test 5 to 2. That one is huge; you need our GPU to run great of most of games.

That concludes our RX 580 vs GTX 970 comparison review. See you on the next one.
